How to Evaluate Automotive Clear Coat Samples

A clear-coat sample is most useful when the buyer defines the repair process, paired basecoat and evaluation method before spraying the panel.

Automotive clear coat sample panel under finish evaluation

Start with the intended repair scenario

A small spot repair, a panel repair and a larger refinishing job place different demands on workflow. Describe the repair size, equipment, application environment and customer type before selecting samples.

  • Repair size
  • Spray equipment
  • Application environment

Use the correct surrounding products

The clear coat should be evaluated over a compatible and properly applied basecoat, with the specified hardener and thinner where applicable. Uncontrolled substitutions can make the result difficult to interpret.

  • Paired basecoat
  • Specified hardener
  • Suitable thinner selection

Record more than gloss

Visual gloss is only one observation. A distributor evaluation should also document application behavior, surface appearance, process timing and how consistently technicians can reproduce the result under the agreed method.

  • Application observations
  • Surface appearance
  • Repeatability and workflow fit

Questions buyers ask

Should clear coats be compared on different basecoats?

For a controlled comparison, use a consistent, compatible basecoat and panel-preparation method unless the purpose is specifically to evaluate compatibility.

What information should accompany a sample request?

Include market, repair type, current coating process, application equipment, working conditions and the products you want to evaluate.
